#LuckySeven, Taunting The Sin

My turn! I got tagged by one of my dear crit partners, Sabrina Garie. Drop by her blog and give her a shout! She got tagged before me, so don't miss a chance to catch a quick excerpt from her WIP, Fires of Justice!

So what's lucky seven you ask?

A chance to show off your writing, with a twist. You have to post it as is at the time of the tagging, warts and all. Here's how it works!

  • Go to page 7 or 77 in your current manuscript
  • Go to line 7
  • Post on your blog the next 7 lines or sentences -- AS THEY ARE!
  • Tag 7 other people to do the same

My seven sentences are from page 77 of my WIP novel, Taunting the Sin. Quick summary: Jaime (our darling hero) has just had a run-in with his mother, Titania, Queen of the White Court; a run-in that reminds him of his father's execution at his mother's hand. And now someone near and dear to Jaime may be under Titania's vengeful and spiteful eye.

"His death had subdued her instant fury but hadn’t managed to sate the desire for vengeance against his co-conspirator.
Jaime shuddered as agonizing memories surfaced.
Silence.
Jaime filled himself with silence. His tears dried. His mind emptied.
And still the secrets whispered in his ears… bidding him listen… listen to their descants of death."

"So who's up next" you ask?

Why, how thoughtful of you to wonder. Let me sate quench your curiosity!

If you'd prefer not to, no prob! But if ya have a min to post it up and don't mind, it'd be an awwweesome dealy!

Don't forget to follow these lovely ladies on FB and Twitter, as well! LOTS of incredible info upcoming, all the time!

On "The Muse"

www.peterleavell.com
"The Muses (Greek: Μοῦσαι, moũsai:[1] perhaps from the o-grade of the Proto-Indo-European root *men- "think"[2]) in Greek mythology, poetry, and literature, are the goddesses of the inspiration of literature, science and the arts. They were considered the source of the knowledge, related orally for centuries in the ancient culture that was contained in poetic lyrics and myths. The compliment to a real woman who inspires creative endeavor is a later idea." (Wikipedia)

The start of every literary creation is the simple idea. The idea can be anything. A picture, a scene, an ending, a fight. But it's enough to motivate the thinker towards something bigger.

In the reading and writing world, we often hear authors referring to the "Muse". Oftentimes, we nod, smile, humor them and consign this attribution to being part of the inherent schizophrenia that makes their novels oh-so-delectable.

Sex and the Writer

Brown-chicken-Brown-Cow!

I would totally be a liar if I didn't admit that I do so enjoy the adult scenes in romance novels. It's true. Thoroughly and completely.

And I write romance novels at around the same heat level.

So my friend and I have been reading over each other's "WiP" (Works in Progress) to get them ready for submissions and it came up, today, that we're about to hit the first of the horizontal mambos to be read.

As a reader, I instantly respond...

 "Booyah! Score!"

As a writer, however, I instantly respond....

Sick and Tired!

I really mean that.

I am sick and tired!!

I've been down for the count for the past 24 hours. I'm sitting up, however, so that's a plus! Yay, go team!

Unfortunately, my brain isn't working entirely well, so today's blog post is going to be super short. In fact, all I'm going to say is: I WON! I know, I can't believe it! What did I win, you ask? Well, lookee here!

Receiving My First Real Critique

Barring emergencies, sick kids, and the like, today my manuscript ("MS") is "critted" for the first time.

Day 6. or is it 7... what am I talking about, again?

Youngest was sick, again so I was up until 3:30 this morning. Had a meeting, later in the morning. Wasn't entirely coherent and don't remember most of it as I sort of glazed out.

I'm not sure whether to be disappointed or disheartened that no one at the meeting seemed to notice a difference.

So back to writing!

I have a new writing partner!! And it's a guy. No joke. True story.

We're going trade our stuff and critique each other!

I'm terrified.

Suddenly, my manuscript just doesn't seem to hold up to anything and I want to excuse anything and everything about it. Is that a bad thing? Aren't I supposed to "own" my work? "Yeah, this is my stuff and I'll never change it because it's perfect!" But nooooo... instead it's "Uhhhhhh.... my daughter wrote it. YAH, THAT'S IT!"

Sad beginning. *tear*

We'll see how it goes, though! I'll never get better if I don't.. well.. get better, I guess. And how am I to know if I can or where I can get better if I don't have some objectivity, eh?

Here goes nothing! Wish me luck! Monday is the day! And I have to manage to keep my 6 year old (who's in half-day Kindergarten) preoccupied during all this.

Going to need an extra cup of coffee, methinks......
